The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned the alleged owner and publisher of Igbo Times Magazine and iNews, Mr Ejike Ofoegbu, over the alleged publication of false and defamatory reports against the family of the Anambra State Governor.
The command said Ofoegbu was arraigned before a competent court on Monday after investigations into a petition alleging that he published fabricated reports capable of damaging the reputation of the governor’s family and inciting public disaffection.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka on Monday.
According to the statement, the suspect was received by the police from the Department of State Services in Awka before he was charged to court following the conclusion of investigations.
“The suspect has been remanded in a correctional centre in the state,” the statement read.
The police said they would refrain from making further comments on the matter to avoid prejudicing the ongoing court proceedings.
The command also urged members of the public, media practitioners and publishers to verify information before publication and adhere to the ethics of responsible journalism as well as existing laws regulating the dissemination of information.
